ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Contemporary artist Silas Schletterer was born and raised in Middelburg, The Netherlands. He moved to Rotterdam to study Illustration at the Willem de Kooning academy of art, after which he began working as an illustrator, before deciding to follow his heart and focus on his autonomous body of work.

Inspired by films and fashion photography, he chooses young women and men as subjects. He tells stories of beautiful, yet lonely beings in a quest for perfection and happiness. The composition of his paintings often tends to be cinematographic, with nature claiming a central role. The relationship between human and animal, the search for a long, lost soulmate and the void of desolate surroundings are recurring subjects in his work. However, Silas’ work simultaneously engages with the manner of all things, telling a particular story in a particular way, whilst evoking myriad stories and an unravelling of questions.

The characters he paints are fictional. By combining facial parts of different models and reassembling them via his own unique interpretation, Silas creates portraits of distinct personages that are ethereal, almost alien in nature. His work is characterised by bold colour and his trademark characters, although that artist is dedicated to experimenting with this classic theme.

Silas was a member of Dutch art collective Antistrot from 1997 – 2010. This renowned group of artists showed all over the world including Tokyo, Miami, Dublin, including two solo exhibitions in New York and San Francisco. The artist featured in Blend Magazine and was included in a list of important painting purchases worldwide, making his work a sound aesthetic and financial proposition for 19 Karen clientele.
