ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Norwegian born artist, Fanny Brodar, holds a BFA from The Art Institute of Boston with a background in illustration. Drawing inspiration from the playful world of Japanese art and artists like Rose Wylie, Fanny’s art is a vibrant exploration of memory, nostalgia, and the boundaries between reality and imagination.

Born in Oslo in 1971, Fanny spent her formative years in New York and currently resides in Maine. Her work is a dynamic fusion of the 1970s and 2000s, an animated tapestry woven from childhood memories, present-day experiences, pop culture, and glimpses of the future. Bright colours, childlike marks, and scribbled words invite viewers to explore their own nostalgia while questioning the nature of reality.

Influenced by the playful curiosity of childhood and expressive characters, Fanny’s art is fun, raw, and unusual. Her figurative pieces, rendered in bold fluorescent colours, offer glimpses into her creative process through exposed pencil marks, paint drips, and deliberate unpainted areas. This unfinished quality echoes the subconscious creativity of children, who possess an innate understanding of when a piece is complete.

Fanny’s paintings are deeply personal, ducks, reminiscent of her childhood pets, Muppet-like monsters, and beloved plants all find their way into her nostalgic works.

Since 2020, Fanny’s work has experienced a surge in popularity, with seven solo exhibitions in Paris, China, Spain, Florida, and South Korea over eighteen months. She has also participated in group exhibitions in Copenhagen, Taiwan, and Los Angeles, and has five exhibitions scheduled into 2024.
