ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Contemporary artist Silas Schletterer creates portraits that feel instantly familiar yet impossible to place — cinematic figures suspended somewhere between memory, fashion imagery, and fiction. His paintings draw viewers in through stillness, atmosphere, and an unmistakable sense of presence.
Working with layered colour, soft distortion, and carefully constructed compositions, Schletterer builds faces from fragments of different models, creating entirely fictional characters with striking emotional depth. The result is work that feels deeply human without being tied to a specific identity or narrative.
Across his paintings, solitary figures, animals, and open landscapes exist in quiet conversation with one another. Nature is not simply a backdrop, but an active force within the work — amplifying mood, tension, intimacy, and wonder. Influenced by film and fashion photography, his compositions often unfold like scenes from an unseen story, inviting viewers to linger and create their own interpretation.
What makes Schletterer’s work so compelling is its balance of elegance and ambiguity. His portraits are undeniably beautiful, yet never superficial; emotionally charged, yet open-ended. The longer you look, the more the paintings reveal — subtle shifts in expression, traces of vulnerability, moments of calm, resilience, curiosity, or longing.
Alongside his solo practice, Schletterer was a member of the Dutch art collective Antistrot from 1997–2010, exhibiting internationally in cities including Tokyo, Miami, Dublin, New York, and San Francisco. Following the collective’s evolution into KAMP HORST, he continues to work across both studio painting and large-scale mural projects.
