aRTIST bIOGRAPHY
Sebastian Kuban is a German painter based in Constance, whose work explores contemporary culture through a vibrant mix of pop culture, fashion, subcultures and digital imagery. After studying at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg, he developed a distinctive visual language combining cartoon-like figures, graffiti-inspired marks and layered cultural references. His paintings initially appear playful and spontaneous, yet beneath their bold colours and seemingly naïve style lie more complex social observations. Blending mythology, symbolism and everyday imagery, Kuban creates energetic, multi-layered compositions that reflect the contradictions, absurdities and realities of contemporary life.
“I create paintings that oscillate between naivety and calculation. Inspired by pop culture, fashion, video games, and subcultures, I develop my motifs from fragmented sketches into multi-layered compositions. In doing so, I integrate symbols and codes from mythology, typography, and everyday culture. I translate these visual references into a pop-cultural language that combines elements of graffiti, illustration, and painting. This results in a reflection on the digital age and its absurdities. The outcome is a play between spontaneity and construction, lightness and depth – seemingly playful at first glance, yet with a critical undertone.” – Sebastian Kuban
