artist biography
French artist Geoffrey Bouillot (b. 1990, Chalon-sur-Saône) has been based in Tokyo since 2011, developing a distinctive visual language that bridges French avant-garde traditions, particularly Cubism, with contemporary Japanese aesthetics. Working in acrylic, he creates precise monochromatic compositions in which organic forms merge with mechanical structures. His modular figures and immaculate surfaces evoke mass production, yet every work is meticulously painted by hand, emphasising discipline and craftsmanship. Moving between vibrant, pop-inspired imagery and minimalist compositions, Bouillot explores the tension between visual saturation and simplicity. His work features in international collections, including the Xiao Museum of Contemporary Art and Mangroves Foundation, and has appeared at Sotheby’s and Phillips auctions.
“In the collective exhibition Two of a Kind, my two works examine the duality between the digital and the industrial. Inspired by video game icons such as Bomberman and Cuphead, they deconstruct these figures into metallic fragments to reassemble them in a robotic style. This process of fragmentation and reconstruction reveals the tension between digital fluidity and the rigidity of industrial design. By blending the ephemeral nature of pixels with the permanence of metal, my creations explore the transformation of contemporary symbols, offering a new interpretation of video game heroes at the heart of an ever-evolving culture.” – Geoffrey Bouillot
