Artist Biography

Based in Aalborg, Denmark, Filip Hartman is a self-taught artist who has dedicated himself to painting since his high school years. His work explores the stories and nuances of everyday life, often infused with a playful sense of humour. Colour lies at the heart of his practice, with each composition shaped by the interplay, contrast and harmony of hues rather than the subject alone. Hartman frequently depicts faceless figures, using body language, posture and atmosphere to convey emotion and invite personal interpretation. Often fragmented or missing details, his figures embrace imperfection, adding character and intrigue to his distinctive visual language.

“My artistic practice revolves around interpreting historical narratives through a modern, stylized aesthetic. These works explore how identity, culture, and joy can be distilled into geometric forms and colour fields while maintaining a sense of recognition and symbolism. The faceless characters represent a universal narrative of human existence, power, and relationships – an anonymization that both creates distance and invites interpretation. The colour palette is deep and contrasting, reinforcing the dramatic and narrative aspects of the works. Each composition balances between the figurative and the abstract, allowing viewers to project their own stories onto the piece.” – Filip Hartman
