Artist Biography
Born in Maribor and based in Lendava, Slovenia, Sabina Šinko is a painter, costume, set and puppet designer, and Assistant Professor at the University of Maribor. Exhibiting internationally, her practice explores the interplay between reality and fantasy, popular culture and intimacy. Working with ink, watercolour and acrylic, she creates dreamlike, theatrical compositions that blend human, animal and natural forms. Her work often responds to global concerns, including migration and ecological disasters. Through fluid colour, layered techniques and expressive imagery, Šinko balances control with spontaneity, inviting viewers into imaginative worlds rich with emotion, symbolism and surreal detail.
“My artistic work as is focused mainly on painting watercolour, ink and acrylic techniques on canvas, paper and silk. For me, creativity is a play between control and freedom where subjects display their feelings, moods and emotions. My research topics are relationships between reality and fantasy, mass, popular culture and intimacy. The portraits, my favourite motif, represent my experience with perception of an individual face through the process of painting. The flowing watercolour technique allows me to create an image, that consists of the visible and invisible of an individual, which can be transferred to the community in general and is also a self-reflection.” – Sabina Sinko
