BIOGRAPHY

Leisa Russell works and lives in Bryon Bay. Russell has many creative outlets including interior design and jewellery however she works predominantly as a sculptor. This passion began early, when during childhood Russell began sculpting with clay and the objects she found in the bush around her rural home, an enterprise which also instigated her strong affinity with flora and fauna.

A self-taught artist, Russell’s work showcases her broad skills and versatility. Adept with mediums bronze, clay, resin, silver, wood, forged steel and concrete, her work ranges in scale from small pieces to life size works.  Russell is loyal to her process and to the materials that have successfully seen the continued evolution of her work.  Using a combination of fine porcelain paired with rugged coloured concretes, Russell transforms the fragility of salvaged objects into robust and textural forms.

The artist states, “Much of my work is influenced by my tireless exploration into the intricate, structural and textural aspects of nature. Combining these elements with the versatility of the mediums I choose to work in such as clay or concrete, I am rewarded with the opportunity of delivering, not only, visually appeasing work but also evoking a ‘hands on’ experience to the viewer.”

Leisa Russell is the recipient of the Border Art Prize and the Kaske Award. She has been included in numerous sculptural exhibition and art shows within Australia.
