Rune Christensen (DENMARK)

International Artist

Born in the East Jutland, Rune Christensen is a self-taught graffiti artist who has since traveled the world. This lead him to become fascinated with the patterns and colours of traditional handcraft, costumes and the temple decorations of Asia, South America, North Africa and Native America. Rune can also be described as an ink and urban artist.

Shooting all those artistic memories with his camera, he uses them as references for his work, both with acrylic paint and Posca pens. The result is a collection of faceless portraits. The peaceful poise of Rune Christensen’s heroines and heroes create a very touching mood, somewhere between childhood’s innocence and trendy Scandinavian design.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Rune Christensen is a self taught artist and globetrotter based in Denmark who is notorious for creating art within art. He has travelled the world, and became fascinated with the patterns and colours of traditional handcrafts, costumes and the temple decorations of Asia, South America, North Africa and Native America. Shooting all those artistic memories with his camera, he uses them as references for his work, both with acrylic paint and Posca pens. Combining brush strokes and illustration makes sense for an artist who celebrates juxtaposition in his work.
The backgrounds in his paintings are as simple as his characters are intricate. This painter, illustrator and street artist uses tattoos and adornments on his figures as part of his experimentation with pattern. Their skin is adorned with symbols, drawings and text that makes Rune Christensen’s style distinctive and unique. His work is bright, fun, and visually exciting.

ARTIST STATEMENT

In my paintings, I try to express the thoughts and feelings I experience in meeting with people and places in the world I move in.
The process begins with a thought about – and a sense of something indefinable that must be expressed. Often I take a lot of photos of the people around me, looking at things like leaves and rocks and end up with some compositions that fit the idea and feeling I’m  trying to express in the work. I work a lot with patterns and colours, I’ve had great inspiration from my travels, especially Asia  where traditional costumes, temple decorations, prayer flags, etc. has had a great impact on my style and interest.
I work mainly with acrylic and Posca, and love what brush strokes and illustration expresses when used together.
I have spent the last 4 years travelling which has brought me to countries like India, Nepal, China, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Jordan, Egypt, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Canada, the US, Indonesia, the Philippines, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.  And it is from these many trips that I find my inspiration.
Many of the countries I travel to are spiced with colours, scents, music and architecture which to us in the north is very remote. It’s hard for me to point out what exactly it is in a country that inspires me. It is often just the thoughts and emotions that arise in the seeing the country and meeting the people.
