Nolwenn Stephan
Biography | Artwork
I was born in France .I lived in London for over 13 years .I have been residing in Australia for 4 years.
Q/A INTERVIEW WITH THE ARTIST
1. At what age did you begin creating art?
I was very little but it wasn’t art as such but like most kids I was in to colours, however I started developing an obsession with paint, still to this day if I am going through a phase and feel uninspired to paint on to canvas, I will rush to the paint shop and paint my bedroom, my kitchen in a different colour, or lately stripes in the living room… it drives my husband crazy!
2. Why do you make art?
I really have no choice in the matter .I studied Fine Art and stepped away from the industry as I worked in different fields for many years in London, and I wasn’t happy ,it all started to make sense again when I started to paint professionally few years ago.
3. Who do you make it for?
Anyone who is going to like it, relate to it and be moved by it.
4. Do you plan out a piece or do you wing it?
All depends sometimes it is planed and sketched and other times I start painting and branch of the mistakes or else…a bad mistake can actually help in the making of a good painting
5. Do you have heroes?
Of course anyone that make a difference in stopping animal cruelty, and helping others and mother earth!!
6. How do you decide when a piece of work is finished?
They never really are…
7 . Do you think having an art education is important to be successful?
To be successful yes it does these days, as people tend to look at your resume in order to represent you or purchase a piece from you when really like Saatchi said” people should buy it because they like it”
Also I really don’t think the level of education defines talent for instance look at Basquiat he never went to an Art school!

ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a visual artist, my work is influenced by Pop Art in some aspects but in others I could also be labelled as a Modern Expressionist ,simply because I have a tendency to distort reality for an emotional effect.
Modern Expressionism feeds from the roots of Abstract Expressionism and German Expressionism, only it is combined with present day media, & urban culture!
In my work there is also a great influence of the Vanitas Movement from the 16th and 17th century... when the question about religion, life and death was predominant...
From the latin" Vanita, vanitatum omnia Vanitas": Vanity of Vanities, all is vanity!!
This style contains pictorial message with moral undertones...that relates to the futility of existence and the absurdity of all humans endeavours...
As you can read my work and inspiration is a combination of things and therefore explore many topics...
The bright colours, composing and medium chosen to approach the subject matter, give the work a very modern edge....
