Bio
Michael Candy is a young, Gold Coast based kinetic artist. Growing up Michael slowly developed an obsession with robotics and animatronics, but struggled to find a realm in which he could freely create without an industrial purpose. now through the use of kinetic and interactive sculpture. Michael explores the contrasting values between technology and nature, and mankind’s influence on the two. He says of his works: "Mankind created technology, for no other purpose than to make human life more sustainable, but we are slowly realizing that our methods have upset the equilibrium of nature as we humans draw further away from our mothers arms. We now realize that humans are a third party to this growing conflict between technology and nature with the ability to influence either side of the balance."
Artist's statement
From a very young age I have always had the ambition to understand how everything worked. No electronic device was ever safe from a screwdriver in my house. As I grew older I developed an obsession with robotics and animatronics, but I struggled to find a realm in which I could freely create without an industrial purpose. I later found art and my passion was opened to a whole new world of freedom and possibilities.
Throughout high school none of my major works have ever been static or passive, inviting the viewers to become involved in the work itself. I graduated from the Southport school in 2008 and have been exploring my purpose ever since.
