Guy L. Warren

Biography | Artwork

Guy L Warren was born in 1971 in Lae, in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. He spent his childhood in Lae, Sydney and Canberra and received a BA (Visual) from Canberra School of Art, ANU in 1994.

Primarily dealing with the nature of the image and the dialogues between different aspects or stages of it, Warren’s work is inquisitive and experimental, akin to that of an alchemist operating in our increasingly image-saturated society, transforming leaden images, found or formulated, into those that are luminous and of a different kind of value. Converting the common into the rare, the multiple into the singular.

Warren has exhibited widely in Australia, including a curated show at the Tweed River Regional Art Gallery, and numerous prizes including the Duke Gold Coast Art Prize; and has also exhibited in Japan. He is represented by 19 KAREN Contemporary Artspace and ‘Resurface’ is his second solo show there. His works are held in public and private collections in Australia and overseas. He currently lives and works on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

ARTIST'S  STATEMENT

My current paintings are highly detailed meditations on throwaway photographic images culled from various sources such as a 1993 bodybuilding magazine and a Japanese natural history book. I was attracted to the original images for different reasons, the commonality being that they all fit my aesthetic, have a high degree of detail and relate to the idea of transformation. The key to my practice lies in the deconstruction and painstaking reconstruction and recontextualisation of the images. The process of painting is not a means to an end, it is a means and an end, and simultaneously a beginning. The point is that the works are paintings; my everyday concerns revolve around moving paint about to create verisimilitude.
