Dan Withey

Biography | Artwork

Dan Withey is an illustrator and artist who works in Adelaide, South Australia, after emigrating from England 6 years ago.  Dan first started to paint 5 years ago having completed a Bachelor in Visual Communication at the University of South Australia in 2007.  Whilst studying Dan was awarded first prize in the Design Institute of Australia student of the year awards in the Graphic Design category.  His work has also been published in Monster Children Magazine as part of the Mooks Art Space competition 2009 and he has also completed work for the Tour Down Under 2010 and other companies.  Dan works predominantly with acrylics and spray paint on recycled boards.

With 9 solo shows under his belt including his recent sell out show at Jackman's Gallery (July 2011) in Melbounre, Dan's future is looking very bright. Dan is represented by 19 KAREN Contemporary Artspace, Gold Coast.

Statement

In his work, Dan deals with his own personal desire to seek freedom from globalization and all the negative aspects that come with it.  He portrays this through the use of images of Native Americans and other people that the artist considers to represent true freedom.  In his eyes they represent something important that we have lost in our modern day world, that has been replaced with fear, paranoia and greed. Dan hopes to help people cut the strings so to speak through his art work and illustrations.
