We are very proud to report that our partner gallery Porter Contemporary had a very successful week at the PULSE Contemporary Art Fair with record sales! Guest artist of 19 KAREN, Jason Bryant, had his own booth which he jazzed up by painting the walls with his signature break out graffiti style graphics to compliment his hanging paintings. Sonja Danowski | The Beginning Book

Congratulations to Sonja Danowski who has recently illustrated a children’s book called ‘The Beginning’. Though the book is a sad story about war, it features Sonja’s incredibly beautiful illustrations that tug at the heart strings. No word yet on if and when the book will be available in Australia though for the mean time you can enjoy Sonja’s other work here.

Opening Night: Saturday 28 April 2012

6-8pm at 19 KAREN Contemporary Artspace

A little piece of Brooklyn, New York, will be coming to the Gold Coast in the form of the SMALL International Group show opening at 19 KAREN Contemporary Artspace on Saturday 28 April 2012.

The SMALL International Group Show sees 33 emerging American artists collectively show what they have to offer the Australian art world. SMALL is curated by established and celebrated artist of the Brooklyn community R Nicholas Kuszyk. The idea came to him after thinking about how emerging artists with limited budgets could display their works internationally without having to pay huge amounts in international shipping fees. The solution was to send small works as a collective.

“The world is small. All of the artists involved in this show are connected. Some are connected socially, some romantically and some as apprentices or influences. I’ve considered hanging the work as an aesthetic spectrum that literally demonstrated the influence that these relationships have on each of the artist’s work,” says Kuszyk.

For Kuszyk it is more about mapping together a small sample of the greater collective putting Brooklyn on the map as one of the most creative places in the world today.

“This gathering is a small sample of an enormous flowchart of a show with 500 plus artists that range from formal portraits to photography to conceptual objectivity; proving scientifically how their relationships, geography, personality, environment, education and the internet all inform their work,” says Kuszyk.

One artist that is an example of the interconnectedness of Kuszyk’s web is Langdon Graves. Graves and Kuszyk both studied at Virginia Commonwealth University in the 1990s and now live close by in Brooklyn.

“Nick is an old friend of mine and he invited me to participate. It’s always fun to take part in his adventures,” says Langdon.

Other artists that will be featuring in the SMALL exhibition include: SWOON, Blok, D’Metrius Rice, James Callahan, Jessie Rose Vala, Jonathan Mehring, Katherine Chanler, PARS, Patrick Berran, Ryan McLennan and many more.
