Ben Sheers

Biography | Artwork

Ben Sheers is an Australian contemporary artist based on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.
Sheers works predominately in medium of oil painting and his works attempt to find moments of visual poetry within the suburbs and industrial wasteland of our cities.

The paintings find their basis through a continual interest in the formal properties of space, form and the depiction of light. These moments are then combined with the transforming effect of night on the kind of environment which we tend to dismiss as mundane and insignificant. The works move from evocative and intriguing narratives to nocturnal paintings that make use of claustrophobic compositions with a menacing almost horror filmic dimension. He is primarily influenced by Italian metaphysical painting as well as contemporary cinema and the work of American realist painters such as Edward Hopper.

All works are created using a traditional technique of under painting and glazing and complimented with a process of acute observational drawing and constant refinement.

Sheers has an extensive exhibition history with a number of solo exhibitions, numerous group exhibitions as well as being a three time finalist in prestigious art prizes such as the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship and the Metro 5 Gallery Art Prize. His works are held in numerous private collections both in Melbourne and Sydney as well as overseas.

Ben is represented by 19 KAREN Contemporary Artspace.
